Jennifer Anne Garner (born April 17, 1972) is a Golden Globe Award–winning American film and television actress, and producer, who is best known for her role as Sydney Bristow on Alias, a colorful CIA agent.

Early life

Garner was born in Houston, Texas, to Patricia Ann English, a teacher, and William John Garner, a chemical engineer; she is the middle child between two sisters, Melissa Garner Wiley and Susannah Garner Carpenter. When she was four years old, her father's job with Union Carbide relocated her family to Charleston, West Virginia, where Garner resided until her college years. Her parents were quite strict, and did not allow the young Jennifer or her sisters to wear make-up, go to movies or have their ears pierced. In 1990, Garner graduated from George Washington High School in Charleston, where she played the saxophone. She also studied ballet for nine years before enrolling at Denison University to study chemistry. Upon realizing that she enjoyed stage acting more than science, Garner changed her major to drama. Garner graduated from Denison in 1994 and hoped to continue her drama education at Yale University. However, keen for experience, she visited a friend in New York City in 1995 and decided to take her chances in theatre.

Career

In New York City, Garner earned $150 a week as an understudy in a play. She was then cast in her first television role, a part in the made-for-television movie, Zoya, based on the Danielle Steele novel. Her next acting jobs were in two short-lived television series, Significant Others and Time of Your Life, as well as in two Hallmark Hall of Fame movies, including the 1997 film, Rose Hill, based on the best selling book For The Roses by Julie Garwood. In 1996, she appeared in an episode of the NBC drama Law & Order. She played a college student who was engaged in an affair with Det. Rey Curtis. Subsequently, Garner moved to Los Angeles, California, and got a job as a hostess at a restaurant before being cast as Hannah Bibb on the WB series, Felicity. On the set, she met her future husband, Scott Foley. Garner played his character's girlfriend. In 1999 she played a small role in the episode "Pool" of the TV series The Pretender. In 2000, Garner appeared in the comedy Dude, Where's My Car?, playing Ashton Kutcher's girlfriend. In 2001, she appeared as a nurse in the big-budget epic Pearl Harbor, co-starring future husband Ben Affleck and Kate Beckinsale.

Later in 2001, J. J. Abrams (who produced Felicity) approached Garner about starring in a new show he was working on for ABC. Garner auditioned for and was cast in the role of Sydney Bristow in the spy drama Alias. The series became a success and Garner won the award for "Best Actress in a Television Series - Drama" at the January 2002 Golden Globes. Alias had just begun a few months beforehand, and Garner won the award with only half the season's episodes aired. The series was successful, concluding in May 2006 after a fifth, abbreviated season (due to Garner's pregnancy, a development that was written into the storyline of the fifth season). Garner's salary for the show began at $45,000 an episode, rising to $150,000 per episode by the series' end. During the show's run, Garner received four consecutive Golden Globe nominations for her lead performance. She also received four consecutive Emmy nominations for "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series". Garner won the "Actor Award" from the Screen Actors Guild in 2005. In March 2005, Garner directed the fourth-season Alias episode, "In Dreams," which aired in May. Garner received producer credit during the series' final season.

After the initial success of Alias, Garner returned to her film career with a small role in the Steven Spielberg film Catch Me If You Can, and starred alongside Ben Affleck as Elektra Natchios in the action movie Daredevil, an adaptation of the comic book. She reprised her role as "Elektra" in the 2005 spin-off to Daredevil, entitled Elektra. Garner showed her comedic side in the romantic comedy 13 Going on 30, which was a financial success and established her as a leading feature film actress. Garner is known for performing her own stunts, and in January 2005 was forced to bow out of some publicity duties for Elektra, due to what was first thought to have been a viral infection but was revealed to be the effects of nerve damage to her back, caused by a stunt during the filming of Alias.

Garner entered the Forbes "Power 100" list of celebrities in 2005. She ranked as the 5th best paid actress in Hollywood, accumulating an estimated US $14 million over the year 2004/05 . She came 8th behind Cameron Diaz in the power rankings. During the 2006 Academy Awards ceremony, Garner stumbled on her flowing dress (designed by Michael Kors) as she came onto the stage to present the award for Sound Editing. She did not fall, but lost her balance, and jokingly commented, "I do my own stunts!" Garner's next film will be the romantic comedy Catch and Release. She also did voice work for the 2006 version of Charlotte's Web. Garner has formed a production company named Vandalia Films, which will produce its first film in 2007. She will produce the company's upcoming films Sabbatical and Be with You.

Garner takes her first role as part of an ensemble in The Kingdom alongside Jamie Foxx and Jason Bateman. Box office analysts have commented the choice was smart on Garner's part, as her other projects with her as the sole lead are risky gambles.

Personal life

On October 19, 2000, Garner married actor Scott Foley, her Felicity co-star. The two were officially divorced in March 2004. Garner then dated her Alias co-star Michael Vartan until mid-2004, when she began dating her Daredevil co-star Ben Affleck.

On June 29, 2005, Garner and Affleck were married in a surprise ceremony at the Parrot Cay resort on the Turks and Caicos Islands. At the time, Garner was pregnant with the couple's first child. Officiating at the ceremony was her Alias co-star Victor Garber. Her pregnancy was incorporated into the plot of Alias, with the season's episode order cut by a few episodes in order to let Garner go on maternity leave. On December 1, 2005, she gave birth to their daughter, Violet Anne Affleck. They currently divide their time between Santa Monica, California and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Garner enjoys cooking, gardening, hiking and kickboxing (a hobby inspired by her Alias character). She is also best friends with actress Jean Louisa Kelly, who interviewed Garner for the June 2005 issue of Self magazine.

How to pick up a girl?

Sometimes picking up a girl may seem to be embarrassing, difficult and impossible especially if you are doing it for the first time. For most men it is not easy to approach a girl. So is it that hard to pick up a girl?

I think if you are confident, skillful, articulate, have sufficient courage, and are armed with the right techniques then it is not that difficult to approach or pick up a girl.

There are several things you need to take into consideration. Be positive:

Women do not like men who are pessimists and have a negative approach to life. Actually nobody like people like that. Hence, it is necessary to have a positive attitude and show it when it comes to picking up a girl.

Smile:

"A smile increases your face value", and surprisingly it costs nothing. Therefore, especially while approaching any girl, smile constantly.

Utilize What You Have: Most men dwell on what they don't possess. They feel that they don't have the charm and seductive attraction some guys have. Sometimes they regret that they don't have a nice body.

But haven't you seen many men who are good looking but don't have any girl. Be confident and try to capitalize on the assets that you have! Make Her Laugh: Making your woman laugh will do the trick. Laughter attracts women easily and in less time. If you are successful in making her laugh a lot, you have already won the battle.

Don't Fear Rejection:

Most men remain unsuccessful in the task of picking up a girl because they fear rejection. The fear of rejection is the main cause behind the failure. Take every rejection as the next step to success and learn from your mistakes.

Every time you get rejected, you are moving one level up, because once you become comfortable with girls saying no, your fear of rejection will be gone. So instead of getting hurt, be confident after every rejection. Remember, the guys who get rejected the most are the ones who leave with the most numbers!

Be A Good Listener: It always pays to be a good listener. Observe the things she is saying as well as your surroundings. Stop worrying about what to say next and focus your attention on listening.

During the conversation, always make a direct eye contact with her. Believe me she will give you leads about what she would like to talk about, in essence, telling you want to say next.

Increase A Women's Interest:

If a woman is interested in carrying on a conversation with you or meeting with you, you have actually won half the battle.

You must concentrate on indulging in a conversation she would be interested in. Never fake it. Try to speak about a general topic, a situation or try to listen to her opinions on something really interesting.

Gain Respect: Remember that a woman would never like to sleep with a man she does not respect. It is necessary to gain respect by showing respect to a woman and making her realize that you genuinely like her company. Get Her Phone Number: Getting the phone number or contact details of a girl is important when it comes to picking her up. Now this is a difficult and time-consuming task. You must work hard in order to be successful in your goal.

Use Good Pick Up Lines:

When picking up a girl, you can never go wrong with a great pick up line. The best way to start a conversation with a woman is to say "hi". This is the best opening line.

Now, once she responds, try to proceed further. For example, if you are at a music concert, a theater or a sports arena. You can continue the conversation by saying

Now, if a woman is near you, you need to try out the famous 'goodbye introduction'. You can start with "Hi, I am just leaving. But before I do, I would like to introduce myself to the most wonderful woman around". And then see the result.

Perhaps it could become one of the best pick up lines. There are bright chances that she would show some interest (that otherwise was not possible) and you will get introduced to each other. Before leaving you can ask, "Nice talking to you. I'd like to talk to you again, is there a number I can reach you at?"

Believe me guys this always works and brings much better results. There is hardly any girl that would say "no", because you are giving her a chance and just asking her number to reach at. So use this technique to pick up any girl of your choice, and see the result.

Why? Because here her left-brain starts working and she would be under some hypnotic mode where she can't afford to say "no" because that will mean there is not a number that she can be reached at.

Moreover, it also makes you more original than every other idiot that asks for her number directly.

No doubt, the question how to pick up a girl seems to be difficult and it really is. However, you can simplify it by utilizing the powers you have, and following the tips and techniques mentioned above. All the best!
